One of the most powerful things I see in my work with The Songwriting Charity is what happens when children realise their voices matter.
In many of the sessions I lead, young people arrive nervous and unsure of themselves. Some find communication difficult, some have additional needs, and some simply haven’t had many opportunities to express their thoughts and feelings.
Songwriting changes that.
Music creates a safe space where ideas can grow. A simple lyric can express something a child has been holding inside. A melody can carry a story they didn’t know how to tell before.
Then something special happens — they hear their own words become part of a song.
You can see the moment it clicks.
Confidence grows. Smiles appear. They begin to realise that what they think and feel has value.
For children with special educational needs in particular, songwriting can be a powerful bridge for communication, creativity and connection. It allows them to explore emotions, build confidence and collaborate with others in a joyful and meaningful way.
During our workshops, we’re not aiming for the “perfect” song.
We’re creating something far more important.
A sense of belief.
And sometimes, that belief begins with just one lyric…one note and a little bit of hope.
