In loving memory of John Holt, a dear friend and collaborator whose kindness and creativity touched so many lives.

He first reached out to me in September 2018 to ask if I could help him write a song about dementia — something close to both of our hearts. In February 2019, I travelled to Preston, where we worked side by side on what became The Secret D, pouring our hearts into every lyric and melody. The song was later performed by his dementia choir and became a springboard for raising funds for dementia charities.

And you can read more about the song’s release here: https://www.old.careandnursing-magazine.co.uk/dementia/release-song

We’ve kept in touch ever since, and I’m so grateful I had the chance to speak with him just a few weeks ago.

John’s compassion and spirit will live on. He was always thinking about how he could help others - a true inspiration to everyone around him.

My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Rest in peace, my friend.

The Secret ‘D’

Music by Nathan TimothyLyrics by John Holt / Nathan Timothy

(Verse 1)

When you are born you never know what the future has planned for you.

You would go to school, work, have fun, and enjoy everything you do.

That’s how it should be, I’m sure you agree.

(Verse 2)

Later in life you can retire enjoy your time ahead.

But how would you feel, If you start forgetting the words you said?

Are you feeling lost? Not sure where you are?

(Chorus)

We should name it The Secret D

Invisible to all that you meet.

It’s hard for you to understand what it’s done

So just stand up and shout - You will not beat me.

(Verse 3)

There are things you can do but there’s no medication to stop it.

The Alzheimer’s Society organise lots of activities that can help.

You must say to yourself, 'Keep active.Don’t sit around.'

(Verse 4)

Once a week, you will be able to learn some crafts, sing some songs.

There is a café each month where you talk and meet people,

Who know what’s wrong, feel the same.

You can make new friends who will understand.

(Chorus)

We should name it The Secret D

Invisible to all that you meet.

It’s hard for you to understand what it’s done.

So just stand up and shout - You will not beat me.

(Bridge)

If you take a look around and see what’s happening,

We will treat you with respect confide in us.

You must know that when we look upon your photographs,

That we see the person that you always were,

The person that you are.

(Final Chorus)

We should name it The Secret D

Invisible to all that you meet.

It’s hard for you to understand what it’s done.

So just stand up and shout - You will not beat me.
